Van Cleef & Arpels Has Some Great Watches Under Their Trademark Poetic Astronomy™

We are a bit late on this, but
Poetic Astronomy™ wrist watches from Van Cleef & Arpels are magnificent.

See the watches at Poetic Astronomy™ - Inspiration - Van Cleef & Arpels.

Our own favorite is Midnight Planetarium,
but the pages there shift so fast you really do not have time to read them!

The watch features six planets that rotate in true astronomical time around a rose gold sun. See Ellie Zolfagharifard at the Daily Mail in Forget smartwatches - wear this £150,000 PLANETARIUM on your wrist. If you add a few diamonds to the planetary precious stones, the price can go to £247,700.

The Jaquet Droz Bird Repeater with New Mechanical Complications Featured at the Robb Report

The new Jaquet Droz Bird Repeater is featured at the Robb Report at FrontRunners: Jaquet Droz.

For a description of the mechanical complications of this watch, which costs about a half a million dollars and includes movable birds, see the Robb Report.

Please keep in mind that our interest in these watches is not so much how much they cost, but rather the human ingenuity and creativity that they represent.

This is just a beautiful watch, whose complex machinery is a joy to behold.

Gold Demand Leads to Stripping of Timepieces and Cultural Loss of Watches

See Felicia Craddock's report at the New York Times in Histories Lost as Timepieces Are Stripped for Gold.

Fine & Luxury Watch Exhibition by TimeCrafters in New York City Park Avenue (Seventh Regiment) Armory September 13-15 2012

If you are in the New York City area and looking for something interesting to do this week, here is a tip for natives and tourists alike.

Watches constitute a special individual status symbol around the world, while timepieces in general reflect precision technology in human culture.

The TimeCrafters Exhibition of the World's Finest Watches
takes place at the New York City Park Avenue Armory
(also known as the Seventh Regiment Armory -- see Google Street View)
from Thursday, September 13 to Saturday, September 15, 2012,
643 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10065
(between 66th and 67th Streets on Park Avenue, near Hunter College on 68th Street and Lexington, the closest subway station).

For more information, go to timecrafters.

This is not an ad on our part, just interest in watches.

Antique Breguet Watches Sold at Record Prices at Christie's

This was an initial interesting piece on Timepieces with History at WSJ.com so I was interested to see what price the watches would actually bring at auction.

As reported at WorldTempus.com in BREGUET- Two Antique Watches Bought For A Record Price Of Nearly 7 Million CHF, the watches were sold on auction at record prices far above what had been expected.

Albert Einstein's Watch was a 1929 Longines

Ken Kessler has the story at The Wall Street Journal section on Watches and Jewelry in The Wisdom of Going Back in Time, writing inter alia:
""On October 16th, 2008, Albert Einstein's wristwatch—a discreet gold rectangular Longines dating from 1929—realized an astounding $596,000 at Antiquorum's New York auction. The connection with Einstein elevated a single, simple Longines wristwatch into Patek Philippe territory."
